Mammography in Motion
On October 29, 2009 StreetLight Mission hosted the Mammography in Motion mobile van providing 19 women uninsured and underinsured women access to screening mammograms, clinical breast exams and educational information. Funding for the van was provided by The North Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® allowing the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey to expand its Mammography in Motion program.
Screening Assistance of Value to Essex, a program of the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and the Department of Radiology at UMDNJ’s The University Hospital, administers the mobile mammography van, which features a digital imaging system, a dressing room, an exam room, a lavatory and reception space. It is staffed by a physician or physician assistant and a mammography technician from UMDNJ. Radiologists and administrators interpret the mammograms for follow up by the UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School-University Hospital Cancer Center oncologists and surgeons.
In April of this year at the official dedication of the new vehicle, Dr. William F. Owen Jr., president of UMDNJ stated that “This project will help fill a vital need for better access to healthcare for women, particularly those who are without transportation to healthcare facilities.”
